The SARS Pre-Outbreak Arbitrage
Cause
On November 16, 2002, an unusual respiratory virus infected a farmer in Foshan, Guangdong province. Over the next few months, it spread quietly. By February 2003, rumors of a deadly pneumonia spread via SMS messages across China.
The ensuing panic caused the public to desperately seek anything believed to prevent the disease. Supermarkets and pharmacies were stripped bare. The prices of N95 masks, thermometers, white vinegar (believed to disinfect air when boiled), and Banlangen (a traditional Chinese medicine) skyrocketed by 10x to 50x within days.
Process
As a time traveler, you have a 3-month head start. In December 2002, you travel to pharmaceutical wholesale markets and grocery distributors. You bulk-purchase thousands of boxes of N95 masks, cases of Banlangen granules, and pallets of cheap white vinegar. You store them safely in a dry warehouse.
Result
By early February 2003 in Guangdong, and by April 2003 in Beijing, the panic buying reaches mass hysteria. A 2 RMB bottle of white vinegar is suddenly being demanded for 50 RMB. A 5 RMB box of Banlangen is fetching 100 RMB. You step in to supply the desperate market, multiplying your initial investment incredibly quickly while avoiding the stock market entirely.
🚀 Time Traveler's Playbook (How to Exploit This)
- 🎯 Target Acquisition: Wholesale distributors of Banlangen, white vinegar, and high-quality medical masks in late 2002.
- 🛠️ Core Operation: Buy in extreme bulk. Fill a warehouse. Wait until February 2003 (if you are in Southern China) or April 2003 (if in Northern China) when the rumors peak and supermarket shelves are instantly emptied.
- 💰 Profit & Extraction: Sell to local pharmacies, small supermarkets, or directly to anxious communities. CRITICAL WARNING: Do not be too greedy. Sell at a 300% to 500% markup early in the panic. Do not attempt a 5000% markup, as the Chinese government quickly initiated a massive crackdown on price gouging, arresting merchants and confiscating inventory. Sell out early, take your cash, and isolate yourself safely at home until the epidemic passes.
