Baidu MP3 Search & Early SP Arbitrage

Cause

In 2002, broadband internet was spreading across China, and the primary reason ordinary people bought computers was to chat on QQ and download free music. Recognizing this, Baidu launched its "MP3 Search." It was a massive success, driving incredible volumes of traffic and effectively allowing Baidu to beat Google in China.

However, Baidu didn't host the MP3s themselves; they simply linked to them. The files were hosted by thousands of shady, copyright-infringing websites run by webmasters across the country.

Process

For a time traveler, this is an incredibly simple traffic arbitrage. You don't need a massive server to host files. You build a basic website, write a script to scrape MP3 links from other servers, and organize them into charts (e.g., Jay Chou, Andy Lau).

When Baidu spiders index your site, you will receive tens of thousands of daily visitors looking for free music. You monetize this traffic using the infamous "SP" (Service Provider) model. You place aggressive, deceptive ads on your site: "Download this song to your phone as a ringtone!"

Result

When a user enters their phone number to get the ringtone, the SP aggressively subscribes them to a 10 RMB/month SMS service, often making it impossible to cancel. Because regulations were virtually non-existent, the profit split between you (the webmaster) and the SP was highly lucrative. A simple MP3 link-aggregator site could generate thousands of RMB a day in passive income.

🚀 Time Traveler's Playbook (How to Exploit This)

  • 🎯 Target Acquisition: Chinese netizen traffic specifically searching for popular early 2000s Pop music (like Jay Chou) via Baidu.
  • 🛠️ Core Operation: Register cheap domains. Build automated MP3 download sites using simple open-source CMS tools. SEO-optimize them to rank highly on Baidu MP3 search. Partner with local SP (Service Provider) companies to cover your site in mobile ringtone subscription ads.
  • 💰 Profit & Extraction: This is an unethical, gray-market business. Milk the incredible cash flow from 2003 to 2005. Abandon the sites entirely by 2006 when the Chinese government (MIIT) launches a massive, brutal crackdown on deceptive SP billing practices.
