The WorldCom Accounting Fraud Short

Cause

In early 2002, the telecom sector was suffering from massive overcapacity following the dot-com crash. WorldCom, the second-largest long-distance telephone company in the US, seemed miraculously immune, reporting steady profits.

However, CEO Bernie Ebbers and CFO Scott Sullivan were employing a brazen accounting trick: they were categorizing billions of dollars of normal operating expenses (like line costs) as "capital investments." This illegally inflated their profits by over $3.8 billion, allowing WorldCom to maintain its stock price and credit ratings.

Process

As a time traveler, you already know the Enron playbook. Internal auditors, led by Cynthia Cooper, had been investigating WorldCom’s books since May 2002. You don't need to wait for the official announcement.

Throughout late May and early June 2002, you aggressively buy short-term Put Options on WorldCom (WCOM) or borrow the stock to short it. The stock is already bleeding down from its highs of $60 to around $2, but the true fatal blow hasn't landed yet.

Result

On the evening of June 25, 2002, the bombshell drops. WorldCom publicly admits to the $3.8 billion accounting fraud and immediately fires its CFO.

The very next morning, the stock plummets by over 75% instantly, trading for mere pennies. By July 21, 2002, WorldCom files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy—surpassing Enron as the largest bankruptcy in world history at the time. Your deep out-of-the-money put options bought for pennies are now worth a fortune.

🚀 Time Traveler's Playbook (How to Exploit This)

  • 🎯 Target Acquisition: WorldCom Inc. (Ticker: WCOM) in June 2002.
  • 🛠️ Core Operation: Between June 1 and June 24, 2002, load up on Put Options expiring in July or August. The stock is already distressed, but the market does not yet know the company is a total fraud.
  • 💰 Profit & Extraction: Dump your options and close your short positions at market open on June 26 or 27, when panic is at its absolute peak and the stock is hovering at $0.09. Do not hold the bag into the actual bankruptcy proceedings in July.
