Personal Webmaster Era (hao123)

Cause

Around 2000, as cybercafes sprouted across China, a massive wave of ordinary citizens with zero computer experience flooded onto the internet. It was an era before search engines became the default (Baidu was just founded, and Google struggled with localization). More critically, the vast majority of new netizens didn't understand what a URL was, couldn't spell English domain names, and had no idea how to type addresses into a browser. They desperately needed an intuitive, click-and-go "map of the internet."

Process

Between 1999 and 2000, a junior-high-educated cybercafe administrator named Li Xingping noticed this pain point. Using the most rudimentary HTML, he coded a shockingly simple static webpage that categorized and listed links to China's most popular websites (like Sina, NetEase, Sohu, and chat rooms). He named it "hao123". Because the page was incredibly lightweight, loaded instantly, and perfectly solved the novice netizen's dilemma of "where to go on the internet," hao123 spread like wildfire across cybercafes. Following suit, countless grassroots webmasters rented cheap virtual hosts for a few bucks a year, cloned similar directory sites, and relentlessly pushed them to be the default homepage on cybercafe computers.

Result

These seemingly tech-less web directories unexpectedly monopolized the foundational traffic gateway of the early Chinese internet. As traffic skyrocketed, these grassroots webmasters began pasting affiliate ads and pop-ups on their pages, easily monetizing the traffic. In 2004, desperate to capture this massive grassroots traffic funnel, Baidu acquired Li Xingping's hao123 for a staggering 11.9 million RMB plus Baidu stock, creating the greatest overnight-wealth myth for grassroots webmasters in Chinese internet history. Countless imitators also made a fortune selling ads and traffic during this wild era.

🚀 Time Traveler's Playbook (How to Exploit This)

  • 🎯 Target Acquisition: Novice internet users who don't know how to type URLs or use search engines.
  • 🛠️ Core Operation: Create an extremely basic, ugly HTML page containing categorized hyperlinks to popular websites. Make it fast to load. No complex backend required.
  • 💰 Profit & Extraction: Work with local internet cafes to set your site as their default browser homepage. Sell banner ads to tech companies once your daily traffic hits the millions.
